Add Redirector Statistics and Error Reporting to the OpenAthens Reporting Dashboard to restore lost functionality and deliver new insights for libraries.
Why This Matters:
Visibility: Libraries currently lack data on IP bypass usage, limiting their ability to monitor onsite vs remote usage.
Troubleshooting: No mechanism exists to identify broken or unauthorized redirector links or flag potential issues that could be impacting users before they are reported.
Customer Value: These enhancements empower libraries to optimize resource access, reduce errors, and demonstrate the unique benefits of the OpenAthens Federation.
Proposed Features:
-
Redirector Statistics
Redirect Method: Track onsite versus offsite i.e. when the user was directed “To OpenAthens” (offsite) OR “To SP” (onsite).
Domain-Level Reporting: Display usage by domain for service providers with multiple websites (e.g., Elsevier).
IP Bypass Tracking: List onsite usage by IP address. Identify heavy usage locations. Flag missing IPs with limited or no usage. Flag when IP Bypass is blocked due to exceptions in the Redirector settings.
-
Redirector Error Reporting
Display error codes (e.g., UNAUTHORISED, URI_ERROR).
Identify domains causing failures
Identify required resource (for UNAUTHORISED error)
Benefits:
Improves customer satisfaction and operational efficiency.
Reduces troubleshooting time and support tickets.
Reinforces OpenAthens’ competitive advantage.
Allow libraries to proactively identify issues
Technical Feasibility:
Redirectable Domains and IP bypass settings are already available in OpenAthens admin. Back in 2025, logs existed for some of the statistics in this request. Implementation may be possible with existing logs.
